London Guildhall

Few people are aware of it, but beneath the Guildhall Library, in the heart of the City, archaeologists have excavated a 2000-year-old Roman amphitheatre.

For most visitors, viewing the masonry exposed in 1988 does not make it easy to imagine what it was like as an entertainment focus, but a museum professional working as an intern at Guildhall wanted to do something about that and got a go ahead to mount a few performances of Euripides Medea.

It was acted by an all-male cast who all wore masks, classical costume and, in the case of protagonist Jason, height-raising buskins with a strong musical element.

The award was made for this one-off production which, Brice declared, played around with the separation between reproducing and recreating and showed what a heritage site can do by embracing performance.
