A revival of one of Alan Ayckbourn’s rarely performed works and his 79th play form a double bill at the New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Ayckbourn returns to the New Vic with Confusions which was last seen at the Library Theatre, Scarborough in 1974.

It involves a devoted and isolated mother, her unfaithful travelling salesman husband and a solicitous waiter to well-heeled diners. Throw in a shambolic garden fête and human frailty is laid bare as one hilarious situation after another unfolds. The laughs, however dark, keep on coming.

Ayckbourn’s latest play Hero’s Welcome features war hero Murray who 17 years ago fled the neighbourhood under a cloud. Certain local folk have long memories—not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar. Indeed, once the welcome flags have stopped waving, few of his friends seem particularly happy to see him back.

Murray’s declared intention of staying put and settling down with his new bride threatens to stir up all sorts of old rivalries and resentments. Suddenly, the couple, in search of some peace, find themselves in the firing line again.

Confusions opens at the New Vic on Tuesday 6 October with Hero’s Welcome opening on Thursday 8 October. Both run until Saturday 24 October.
