Kathryn Hunter takes the title role in all-female Cyrano De Bergerac

Russell Bolam returns to London's Southwark Playhouse to direct award-winning actress and director Kathryn Hunter in the role of Cyrano in Glyn Maxwell's adaptation of Rostand's Cyrano De Bergerac.

Kathryn Hunter has worked in film and with leading theatre companies nationally and internationally as an actor and director. She has been awarded a Time Out Award and an Olivier Award for best actress.

Russell Bolam directed Crushed Shells and Mud, Three Sisters, The Seagull and Shivered at Southwark Playhouse. He has directed work at St James Theatre, Arcola Theatre and Finborough Theatre.

Glyn Maxwell’s adaptation of the Rostand classic was first produced at Chester's Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre in 2013 and it was later broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This production is the London première of a new version.

Maxwell’s other writing credits include Liberty, The Lifeblood and The Only Girl in the World and opera libretti of which The Firework Maker’s Daughter with composer David Bruce was shortlisted for Best New Opera at the 2014 Olivier Awards. His poetry has also been award nominated, winning the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for The Nerve.

Cyrano De Bergerac is presented by Lauren Brown and Chloe Courtney. It runs at the Southwark Playhouse from 18 February to 19 March.
