Jabberwocky Market
Ballad of the Burning Star
Dead to Me

Jabberwocky Market, a four day festival of performances, workshops, talks and fun activities for audiences of all ages, returns to venues around Darlington from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 October 2014.

Aiming to present "cutting edge, world-class theatre rarely performed in the North East", Jabberwocky Market also features performances from local artists and musicians.

The performances are:

  • 2 October at Polam Hall
    Make/Shift Projects presents
Fish/Girl: What the Little Mermaid Found Out About the World
Fish/Girl is an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, with the story turned inside out. A freak storm throws the depths of the oceans onto the shore, stranding a Mer Prince. A local girl, on the brink of losing her sense of self and her future, stumbles across him in the darkness of the storm and saves his life by dragging him back into the sea. She falls in love with this ambiguous creature and decides to pursue him into the unknown. But at what price?
For everyone aged 8 and up.
  • 2 October in the Cattle Market
    The D Project presents
    Solas Fae
A winter fairy tale for families.
The mystery of an Irish winter unravels in the heart of Darlington. Traditional legends inspired this story of love, loss and Christmas; performed with live music in unusual spaces and places that the family call home.
    Created by dancer-choreographer Debbie Waistell
  • 3 October at the Voodoo Cafe
    Scratch Night
Shows early in their development and the theatre makers will be open for conversation about what the audience thinks.
  • 4 October in the Liddiard Theatre, Polam Hall School
    Theatre Ad Infinitum presents
    Ballad of the Burning Star
Meet the MC, STAR, and her secret weapons, THE STARLETS, as they examine the life of an Israeli man called Israel. Hear about his childhood in a Jewish settlement built on occupied Palestinian territories, the perpetual war that tore his family apart, and the traumatic events of his military service that made him ask: "Am I a victim or a persecutor?"
  • 4 October at the Voodoo Cafe
Gary Kitching & Co in association with Greyscale presents
    Dead to Me
A disturburbingly funny story about a man and his troubled relationship with a psychic and her spirit guide. When the truth is confronted, an irreversible chain of events is set in motion and Steven finds out that living people can be unnecessarily cruel. The dead are easier to deal with.
  • 5 October in the Central Library
    Bootworks Theatre presents
    The Incredible Book Eating Boy
Adaptation of Oliver Jeffers’s award-winning children’s book by Bootworks Theatre follows the story of a boy with a voracious appetite for books. And better still, he realises the more books he eats, the smarter he gets. But a book-eating diet isn’t the healthiest of habits, as Henry soon finds out! For age 4+.
Each performance is 5 minutes long, performed for two people at a time, and repeats 30 times per day.
