“Fascinating themes”: Jekyll and Hyde

Derby Theatre and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch are to join forces in autumn 2022 to stage a new adaptation by Neil Bartlett of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde.

Sarah Brigham, Derby Theatre’s artistic director who will direct Jekyll and Hyde, said, “I'm incredibly excited to be undertaking this fresh new adaptation.

“I admire Neil Bartlett's work hugely, having directed his version of Great Expectations in 2017, and this new adaptation of the classic story unearths some fascinating themes for today’s audience—the duality of man and of society, how our public and private personas intertwine, and the role of bystanders in extreme circumstances.”

Mathew Russell, executive producer at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, added, “we’re incredibly proud to be co-commissioning a writer of Neil's reputation and can't wait to see Sarah's vision for retelling this classic and sharing it with our audiences from Essex and East London. It's the perfect thrilling theatrical fare for the darkest period of the autumn season.”

The two theatres previously collaborated on productions including Shakespeare’s Macbeth in 2020, Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors in 2019 and Abigail’s Party by Mike Leigh in 2018.

Jekyll and Hyde will run at Derby Theatre from Friday 30 September until Saturday 22 October before transferring to Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from Wednesday 26 October until Saturday 12 November.
