Innovative theatre company Kneehigh reinvents a classic comedy when Steptoe and Son comes to Liverpool Playhouse next month.

Following their success of Hansel and Gretel at the Everyman in 2010, the company returns with joint artistic director Emma Rice helming a new adaptation of Galton and Simpson’s legendary television scripts.

Two men, two world wars and two lives knitted together as tight as a thrice darned sock.

Emma says: “The words, situations and basic genius are all the work and imagination of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. I laughed and wept in equal measure as I made my way through the scripts that make up the Steptoe and Son canon. The work is deeper, darker and more intricate than I’d ever realised, watching as a child.”

The cast includes Dean Nolan (Ashes to Ashes); Mike Shepherd (Midnight’s Pumpkin, The Red Shoes and Don John, Kneehigh); and Kirsty Woodward (Cymbeline, Kneehigh / RSC co-production).
