A NE director-writer, Rebekah (Bex) Bowsher, will have an 18-month residency at Northern Stage and Live Theatre.

Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme 18-Month Residencies are paid opportunities for freelance directors and theatre-makers to work as a resident assistant director in regional building-based companies. The scheme provides opportunities for people to sustain their careers in theatre and support artists into leadership and positions where they can inspire positive change. Through the residencies, the directors develop their creative skills, learn how a theatre runs and have the opportunity to make work by directing a production at the end of the Residency.

Bex Bowsher attended BBC Writers Room Writer’s Access programme, had an RYTDS Assistant Director Placement with Greyscale Theatre Company (2017) during which she was Assistant Director on Dr Frankenstein and Hedda Gabler, This Is Not a Love Story at Northern Stage, both adapted and directed by Selma Dimitrijevic.

She was also part of the Graeae Theatre Write to Play scheme, Writer in Residence at the Leeds Playhouse in 2016, a Live Lab Bursary Winner for her play Spoon Theory, which she co-directed, at Live Theatre, performed as part of the Elevator Festival and a North East Artist Development Network Bursary Winner (2018–19) to develop her newest work Running Through Wheatfields, performed at the Caedmon Hall, Gateshead, as part of a GIFT (Gateshead International Festival of Theatre) scratch night.

She also directed Mel Hunter's Blues for Boys at Alphabetti where her own play Dig was performed.

She is also on the board of Newcastle’s Unfolding Theatre.

When the announcement was made, Northern Stage tweeted, “we are thrilled to be welcoming Bex Bowsher, who will be working with us & Live Theatre over the next 18 months as part of Regional Theatre Young Directors Scheme.

“Congratulations Bex, we can't wait for you to start!”
