Opera North returns to The Lowry in Salford this week with the company’s first productions of 2014, starting with a long-awaited and critically acclaimed new production of Puccini’s opera of the American West, The Girl of the Golden West. Joining it is director Tim Albery's production of Macbeth.

Following a tour of the UK in 2012 and a season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year, Vincent Dance Theatre announced a series of extra dates for its critically acclaimed show Motherland which brings it to Contact in Manchester next Tuesday.

Barry Humphries’ Farewell Tour Eat Pray Laugh! will be at Manchester Opera House this week to give regional audiences chance to bid fond farewell to Humphries' unforgettable characters. The show runs from Tuesday to Saturday.

The Lowry Studio this week stages the world première of States of Verbal Undress, a new verbatim theatre piece from Rasa Productions which captures the soundscape of contemporary, multi-cultural Britain. Performances are next Friday and Saturday.

Hidden delves into the lives of six young people living in a city sprawl. It’s at the King’s Arms in Salford next week and later in the month at Korova arts café in Preston.

Northern Broadsides return to The Dukes in Lancaster this week with its new Lancashire play marking the centenary of the start of World War One. An August Bank Holiday Lark, which runs from Tuesday to Saturday, explores the impact of war on a rural community in East Lancashire.

A Britain’s Got Talent star and Lancaster’s very own Jane Austen are just two of the First Friday highlights in the city next week. First Fridays promote Lancaster Arts City by encouraging residents and visitors to try something new on the district’s cultural scene.
