Matilda inspires young writers

As previously reported, the RSC has expanded its education program with a Matilda The Musical –inspired interactive web site, Write Here Write Now With Matilda, to inspire creativity in the writing of young people.

The theatre company's National Writing Challenge for pupils between the age of eight and thirteen invited submissions of original scripts or songs to be performed live for the students by the Matilda West End cast next month prior to the evening performance.

From over 200 entries, the work of eight schools has been selected for performance: Appleton Academy, Bradford; Bittern Park School, Southampton; Pates Grammar School, Cheltenham; Richmond Park Academy, East Sheen; Scorton C of E Primary School, Preston; St Mary’s C of E (aided) Primary School, Pulborough; St Paul with St Luke C of E Primary School, London and Treorchy Comprehensive School, Mid Glamorgan.

There were ten highly-commended entries who receive other prizes.

Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the RSC; it was written by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
