As previously reported, this year's Theatres Trust Conference looked at sustainability and how the industry may respond to the climate emergency.

Research undertaken on behalf of the national advisory body estimates that making the country's theatre buildings sustainable comes with a price tag of £1.1bn.

This figure is drawn from analysis of one hundred representative theatres which revealed that developing a typical 600-seat venue to make it fully sustainable and accessible would cost £11m. Projecting that across the whole of the UK theatre building stock leads to the £1.1bn total.

The benefits of undertaking such a project are also significant.

The research team estimates revenue recovery of £3.3m each year for the industry and found that 6,500 tonnes of CO2 could also be saved per annum, in relatable terms this is comparable to 9,700 return flights to New York.

The conference also saw the publication of the second part of a three-volume best practice guide for sustainability, the Theatre Green Book. This second part, Sustainable Buildings, has been put together by the Theatres Trust with architect and Theatres Trust interim chair Paddy Dillon, Buro Happold and the Association of British Theatre Technicians.
