Writer, theatre and fiction critic, researcher and academic in Theatre and China.
She holds a PhD in Chinese and Comparative Literature at SOAS, London on Gao Xingjian and Martin Crimp‟s plays and has lectured in Chinese Theatre and Films at SOAS and Women's writing at Goldsmith College.
She is currently a Lecturer in Drama and theatre at University of Essex. She also lectured in Theatre at Goldsmiths College, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of English at Nanyang Tech University in Singapore.
Gao Xingjian's post-exile plays, a monograph on Gao Xingjian and postdramatic theatre, is published with Bloomsbury Methuen Drama.
As a playwright, Mary started writing plays in 2001, training first at Soho Theatre and then at the Royal Court.
Magical Chairs was staged at the Southwark Playhouse and at People's Theatre as part of the Beijing International Fringe Festival (2011)

She wrote plays for Hampstead Theatre (Generator project in 2004), Blue Elephant Theatre (Cavemen, 2005) and other small London based theatre companies.
She has published a book in Italian together with Addolorata Cagnazzo- Riflessioni di un Viaggio-published by Levante. She also writes and has published poems and short-stories.
As a critic, she has contributed to The Times Literary Supplement, Art Desk, Theatre Voice, and What's on Stage. She is also owner and founder of Lumenis Theatre Company, emerging multicultural touring theatre company based in London.
