James Ballands is a Lecturer in the Business of the Creative Industries at the University of York, where he teaches on various undergraduate modules relating to screen media and live performance.

Since 2013 he has run a series of film courses on various topics at York’s much-loved City Screen cinema, including the French New Wave, Ingmar Bergman, the film noir genre, Orson Welles, Federico Fellini, Luis Buñuel, Japanese cinema in the 1950s and 60s, and Agnès Varda.
