Melvyn Bragg and Howard Goodall’s musical The Hired Man has just opened in the studio at Leicester’s Curve.

A co-production by Curve and the Mercury Theatre, Colchester, The Hired Man is set against a backdrop of the Cumbrian lakes in the early years of the 20th century.

Based on Bragg’s novel, it tells the story of a young, married couple and their struggle to carve a living from the land just as the traditional rhythms of English country life are being swept away by the gathering storm of war in Europe.

The cast is led by David Hunter as John, Julie Atherton as Emily and Kit Orton as Jackson.

David Hunter has appeared in One Man Two Guv’nors at the National and Adelphi Theatres.

Julie Atherton’s stage credits include Avenue Q, Sister Act and Mamma Mia in the West End.

Kit Orton’s musical theatre roles include Sir Lancelot in Spamalot in the West End and on tour and Craig Revel Horwood’s production of Spend, Spend, Spend at the Watermill Theatre, West Berkshire.

Daniel Buckroyd directs. Design is by Juliet Shillingford, with lighting by Mark Dymock and sound by Tom Lishman. Musical director is Richard Reeday.

The Hired Man runs at Curve until Saturday 27 April.
