Inspired: Charles Kingsley's novel gave birth to Water Babies

Tom Lister is to make his musical theatre debut in Water Babies, a new production which has its première at Leicester’s Curve theatre.

Probably best known for his role as Carl King in Emmerdale, Lister joins Thomas Milner as well as previously announced Louise Dearman and Lauren Samuels in the musical inspired by Charles Kingsley’s novel.

Lister’s theatre credits include Ralph in Accrington Pals at West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2013, Pan in Love's Mistress at the Globe Theatre and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Settle Festival of Theatre.

Thomas Milner plays Tom. He played Robbie in Soho Cinders at Soho Theatre in 2012 and on television he has appeared as series regular Paul Langley in Waterloo Road.

The rest of the cast comprises Tom Davey (Claude), Caroline Deverill (Lady Amelia), Matthew Gent (Masterman), Andy Gray (Jock), Jeffrey Harmer (Sir John), Samuel Holmes (Terrence), Rebecca Jayne-Davies (Ariadne), Sienna Kelly (Miller), Marcquelle Ward (Rafferty) and Robbie Boyle, Matthew Caputo, Georgia Carling, Jorell Coiffic-Kamall, Cristina Hoey, Marianna Neofitou and Morgan Scott as water babies.

Directed by Ed Curtis with music by Chris Egan and book and lyrics by Ed Curtis and Guy Jones, Water Babies is said to use “some of the most sophisticated special effects ever seen on stage”.

The musical previews at Curve from Thursday 24 April and opens on Tuesday 6 May. It runs until Saturday 17 May.
