Dateline: 15th December, 2006
New Ballet for ENB English National Ballet has commissioned a new three act ballet from Michael Corder for its 2007 autumn/winter season. Admitting it is a risk, ENB Artistic Director Wayne Eagling says that he wants to expand ENB's repertoire with a new ballet in the traditional style and that it should have a recognisable title, that Corder should pick the music, and that it should use the entire ENB company. The new ballet will be The Snow Queen, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, and it will be danced to music by Prokofiev, mainly from The Stone Flower. It will open at the Liverpool Empire on 1st October before beginning a major UK tour with performances in Bristol, Southampton and Manchester, after which it will move to the Coliseum where it will open on 12th December. This will be Michael Corders third new work for English National Ballet. His acclaimed production of Cinderella was premiered in 1996 and won the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and the 1996 Evening Standard Award for Outstanding Production. He created Melody on the Move in 2003, which is to be performed again by English National Ballet as part of the Spring Tour 2007. Melody on the Move was received with standing ovations and critical acclaim at its World Premiere at Sadler's Wells and received the 2003 Critics' Circle Award for best choreography. The Snow Queen is a tale about two young friends Kay and Gerda. Eternal winter descends on their land and Kay catches a sliver of the Snow Queens shattered magic mirror in his eye. As a result he sees everything in the world as bad and twisted. Mesmerised by the beauty of the Snow Queen, he goes with her to her palace in the far frozen north. Gerda searches the world over to find her friend and with the help of the Gypsies and their reindeer, she makes her way to the Snow Queens Palace. Her love for Kay releases him from his spell. The sliver of mirror falls from his eye and the curse of eternal winter is broken. ENB has just announced that it will be dancing the most spectacular scene from Princess Dianas favourite ballet Swan Lake as part of the charity tribute concert in Wembley Arena on 1st July 2007. Princes William and Harry will be hosting the concert in memory of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, to mark the 10th anniversary of her death, and have invited English National Ballet to take part. All proceeds from the concert will go to charities which include The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, of which English National Ballet is a benefactor. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
