RSC Open Workshops in London How Shakespeare's Text Helps the Actor
In a series of special open workshops set over four consecutive Sundays in London, Royal Shakespeare Company Advisory Director John Barton will work with RSC actors to explore how Shakespeares text itself can help the actor.
RSC actors participating in these workshops include Ariyon Bakare, David Fielder, Tamsin Greig, Chuk Iwuji, Joe Mydell, Jonathan Slinger, Katy Stephens, Ann Ogbomo and Lex Shrapnel amongst others. During these practical sessions they will focus on argument, sharing and storytelling.
This will be a continuation and development of the work first publicly shown in John Bartons 1984 TV series, Playing Shakespeare. He has worked with the company for over forty-five years and has come more and more to use Shakespeares sonnets as the key launch pad for revealing and embracing the main textual devices Shakespeare uses throughout his plays. He holds that if actors can absorb, handle and enjoy these devices they will find Shakespeare himself directing them.
"John approaches the text with an actor not on their behalf. He has the rare gift of weaving his own deep understanding and knowledge of Shakespeare's language so lightly, that others find it easy to share with him. His insights are pragmatic and theatrical, not scholarly or literary, and he sees his task as helping the actor to make Shakespeare's language work." (RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd)
The workshops will take place on Sunday 12, 19, 26 November and 3 December 2006. Each session will start at 5pm and will last for approximately three hours.
Please note, the location of the workshops has changed: they will now be held at The Venue, 5 Leicester Place (off Leicester Square), London, WC2H 7BP.
Booking
Places on the workshops are free, but must be reserved in advance by calling 020 7845 0510 or 020 7845 0511 The four sessions are a connected series and people are openly encouraged to attend every week.
