Adrian Mole: from a novel, radio and television to a musical

Based on Sue Townsend’s best-selling novel, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ - The Musical is to have its world première at Leicester’s Curve in spring 2015.

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ was Leicester author Sue Townsend’s first novel and was published by Penguin Books in 1982. It has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, been translated into 30 languages and spawned seven sequel novels. The stories have been adapted for the stage, radio and television.

Fiona Allan, Curve’s chief executive, commented, “We had the huge privilege of being able to work with Sue on this project. It’s very exciting to be staging a new musical adaptation of her much-loved book right here in Leicester, Sue’s home town, bringing Adrian Mole’s story back to life—not only for his fans but also for a new generation.”

The musical has book and lyrics by Jake Brunger and music and lyrics by Pippa Cleary.

Sue Townsend’s husband Colin Broadway said, “Sue was thrilled to be working with the two young talents Jake and Pippa during 2012-14 to bring back to the Leicester stage her best-selling book. We as a family are looking forward to being at Curve for the opening night.”

Sue Townsend (1946 – 2014) was one of Britain's most popular writers, with more than 10 million copies of her books sold in the UK alone.

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ - The Musical opens on 17 March 2015, with previews from 7 March. It runs until 4 April.
