Alexandra Palace Theatre: view from the circle

North London's Alexandra Palace is known as both as "the People’s Palace" and "the birthplace of television" since the BBC started broadcasting some 80 years ago from the UK's first television studio.

Built in 1873, the Palace commands a seven-acre plot and is now a Grade II-listed historic entertainment venue surrounded by parkland. It now hosts, amongst other things, live music, sport, cultural, leisure and corporate events.

The east wing of the building is now to be renovated, work that will include the restoration of the Victorian theatre.

The restoration works are largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Haringey Council, but £1m is required to come from public funding. Donations can be earmarked specifically for either the Victorian Theatre or TV Studios restoration.

The East Wing will open to the public by 2018.
