Amplify associate Nathan Ellis who will run the new writers’ group

Nottingham Playhouse is inviting aspiring playwrights to join a new writers’ group which will run for nine months in 2024.

The call-out is for writers based in the Midlands who want to develop a new play. The free programme will be run in conjunction with new Amplify associate Nathan Ellis.

He holds an MA in playwriting from the University of London and is the artistic director of theatre company SUBJECT OBJECT. He has film projects in development in both Los Angeles and Berlin as well as multiple television projects in development in the UK.

Amplify, Nottingham Playhouse’s artist development programme, aims to develop a network to share ideas. The writers' group will help people to hone playwrighting skills and learn more about how plays are developed for the stage.

There will also be opportunities for writers to have an excerpt performed by professional actors in a rehearsed reading at Amplify Festival 2024, an annual celebration of artists from across the Midlands.

Amplify producer Beccy D’Souza said, “it’s really exciting to have Nathan running this extended programme. Playwrights can find it hard to get practical advice and experience, and it’s hugely beneficial to be part of a community of writers when developing new work and trying to forge a career in writing for the stage.”

Further information including how to apply can be found at the Nottingham Playhouse web site. The closing date for expressions of interest is Monday 8 January 2024. The programme will begin on Tuesday 6 February.
