London's Battersea Arts Centre, which suffered a serious fire last spring, is to open a new open air space next month.

Called the Courtyard, the 75m2 space was envisioned as part of the phased capital project that has been ongoing for some years.

The space reclaims an outside courtyard area largely occupied by building extensions. Stirling Prize winning British architectural studio Haworth Tompkins has designed four new façades with multi-level openings using the existing red brick with white glazed brick infills.

A demountable gallery and floor deck complete with trap doors means Courtyard audiences will be close to the action.

The opening production is Extravaganza Macabre from award-winning national touring company Little Bulb Theatre.

The show, a tale of love and villainy set in Victorian London, has been devised by the cast, Clare Beresford, Dominic Conway and Alexander Scott.

Extravaganza Macabre is presented with Farnham Maltings and is a Playground Project supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Extravaganza Macabre runs at Battersea Arts Centre from 26 July to 26 August.

Friday and Saturday performances are followed by further entertainment in the Scratch Bar.
