Berkoff to Direct Richard II at Ludlow Steven Berkoff is to direct Richard II at this year's Ludlow Festival. Starring Timothy Walker and Liza Sadovy, the play will be set in Victorian times. "I'm setting the play in Oscar Wilde's era when the aristocracy demonstrated an overwhelming superiority that reflected the colonial attitude of the Victorian empire," explains Berkoff. "It has fantastic parallels with today; the arguments about this little island joining Europe make this, of all Shakespeare's plays, the most tangible play to send echoes around the British Isles about the dangers of imperialism, colonisation and nationalism." There are evening performances on 25th June, 27th-30th June, 1st-9th July and matinees on 29th June & 6th July, with a Family Matinee on 2nd July. The venue is Ludlow Castle. The Festival also features dance, music, talks, street entertaiment and exhibitions. For the last three years the director of the Ludlow Festival Shakespeare productions was Michael Bogdanov. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
