(Brighton &) Hove Grown Festival theatre events

Sweet Dukebox, Artista, The Claremont and Purple Playhouse host the (Brighton &) Hove Grown Festival which runs from 24 March to 2 April.

There is a wide range of theatre events in the programme. It includes:

  • Between You and Me from Brighton-based forum theatre collective Speak Up! Act Out! which looks at male abuse
  • O N E from in fragment theatre which uses the voice of Yelena out of Uncle Vanya
  • Good Grief on West 88th Street tells the stories of a number of people connected to a building in NYC
  • Local actor Robert Cohen presents three solo shows on different dates in Men Without Friends: Hamlet told from the point of view of Claudius in Something Rotten, the story of a traffic warden with a stalker in High Vis and The Trials of Harvey Matusow about a McCarthy-ite grass
  • At the Junction Café looks at relationships, memory and human communication when two people meet in a cafe. Who are they?
  • Mr D’s Tales of Myths and Legends invites the audience to bring 'arcane objects' with them to help bring stories to life
  • Stitch It! is the winner of The Bobby Award; a solo show without words, it fuses butoh with mime to create a visual poem (for adults)
  • Cast Iron IX is a collection of new short plays from Sweet Dukebox’s resident drama group

For young audiences, The Anterbury Tales is a reworking of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales featuring Ladybird, the Earwig, and others, for an audience of 7+, and there are musical magical adventures in The Meebles Get The Show On The Road.

The spoken word programme includes The Whisper Through The Static live performances of sci-fi and horror fictional podcasts, poems about drink and drinking in Drunk With A Pen, emerging artist showcase Linguistic Calligraphy and local artists in Poetic Angles.

There are also cabaret, comedy and work-in-progress comedy events.
