The Lowry is set to host the prestigious National Ballet of China November 22 to 26 with a run of one of the most enduring love stories in Chinese literature, The Peony Pavilion.

The company, founded in 1959, is regarded as one of the world’s leading ballet institutions and its production of the Tang Xiazu play is among its most in-demand work.

Written in 1598 and considered an Eastern contemporary of Romeo & Juliet, it tells the story of passion pitted against impossible odds, performed to the music of Debussy, Ravel, Holst and Prokofiev.
