Clements Moves to Milwaukee Former Derby Playhouse artistic director Mark Clements has been appointed to a similar position at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre in the United States. Clements was in charge at Derby from 1992 to 2002, directing more than 50 shows. Some of them were co-productions with Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia and on leaving the East Midlands he went to the States to direct shows for Walnut Street. These included Les Miserables which won the 2008 Barrymore Award for best production of a musical and Of Mice and Men which in 2007 picked up two Barrymore Awards for best director and best production of a play. Clements said of his new position, "I'm really proud and honoured to have this opportunity to help guide the artistic vision of one of the premier American theatre companies and to become a part of the Milwaukee community. "The Rep's actors and staff are among the best in the world and I'm so excited to work with them, to extend the company's reach in Milwaukee and across the country, and to find new ways for the Rep and its community to work together to create spectacular art." Judy Hansen, who chairs the Rep's artistic director search committee, said, "Mark brings a new level of dynamic energy to the Rep and to Milwaukee, combining an international flair with a deep love of American theatre. "He's deeply committed to creating an enriching and entertaining experience that takes the company and the Milwaukee area to new artistic heights." Clements, who became a permanent US citizen two years ago, is currently in Philadelphia preparing to direct Oliver! which has a cast of more than 70. His schedule has meant he's had to call off directing Peter Pan at The Deco, Northampton, this Christmas, although Salisbury Playhouse will be staging his adaptation of Cinderella. Details of his first season as Milwaukee Rep's artistic director will be announced in the spring. Steve Orme
