The next production at Oldham Coliseum Theatre is Spring and Port Wine by Bill Naughton—a comedy about a family at war in Bolton in the late 1960s—and directed by former artistic director of Manchester’s Library Theatre Company, Chris Honer.
Rafe Crompton is struggling to maintain authority over his four grown-up children. Watching the rest of the world change around them and growing frustrated with Rafe’s old-fashioned house rules, Harold, Hilda, Florence and Wilfred are intent on rebellion while their mother, Daisy, desperately tries to keep the peace.
Spring and Port Wine was adapted into a film in 1969 starring James Mason as Rafe. Bill Naughton is best known for Alfie and All in Good Time, which was adapted to film in 1966 under the title The Family Way.
