Closed until at least the end of September 2023: Royal & Derngate

Northampton’s Royal & Derngate has been closed “with immediate effect” and will remain shut throughout September because it contains a type of concrete prone to collapse.

It follows the closure of more than 100 schools in England which have been told they need to introduce safety measures because they have reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

A building survey took place at Royal & Derngate and the concrete was discovered in the foyers. The venue’s two auditoria have closed temporarily along with Northampton Filmhouse.

The theatres’ chief executive Jo Gordon said, “we’re deeply saddened by this discovery and (saddened) to have to close at this time, particularly as September is usually an incredibly busy and important time for the theatre.

“We’re keenly aware of the disappointment that this will cause to audiences, visiting companies and our staff alike although we know they’ll understand that their safety is always our primary concern. We look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as possible and updating further as soon as we are able.”

Shows postponed include the Royal and Derngate, Fiery Angel and ROYO co-production of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None which should have started a UK and Ireland tour in Northampton. The rest of the tour is unaffected.
