A season of new plays by contemporary Chinese writers is being presented for the first time in the UK.

As part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s collaboration with the National Theatre of China, three new plays have been translated into English and adapted by leading Scottish playwrights. They have been developed from over 150 initial submissions which were short–listed through workshops and residencies.

Secrets by Lin Weiran (adapted by Rona Munro), Thieves and Boy by Hao Jingfang (adapted by Davey Anderson) and Fox Attack by Xu Nuo (adapted by Catherine Grosvenor) are each inspired by real events dramatising the tension between public and private lives.

Curator of the New Plays from China season Davey Anderson has said the season offers A few tiny peep holes into parts of China we don’t often get to see.”

The New plays from China season runs from 22 April to 1 June and plays Òran Mór, Glasgow; Bedlam Theatre, Edinburgh and Regal Theatre, Bathgate.

The season is presented by a partnership of National Theatre of Scotland, Òran Mór, SaiTa (Beijing) Cultural LTD, Tian Qinxin Theatre Studio and in association with the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh.
