Derby-based 1623 Theatre Company is offering a limited number of free workshops to people who live and work in dementia care homes.

This follows its Lear/Cordelia project, a double bill inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear which explores how dementia impacts on family life. Lear/Cordelia comprises Lear, a reworking of Shakespeare’s play by 1623 artistic director Ben Spiller, and Cordelia, a new work by Farrah Chaudhry.

Each workshop is based on Lear's memory box, featured in the show, and uses the sensory objects inside to tell the story of Lear and his daughters before shaping and sharing new stories with participants inspired by the objects.

The company has secured Arts Council England funding for the workshops which continue until the end of March. For more details contact [email protected].

Planning is now underway for a national tour of Lear/Cordelia in 2018 and 1623 will shortly be embarking on a major fundraising campaign.

A recording of both plays can be viewed at the 1623 web site.
