Look Back in Anger: symposium will discuss how times have changed

Journalist, broadcaster and author Mark Lawson is to chair a symposium at Derby Theatre exploring the political voices of men and women in Derby from 1956 until today.

It coincides with the theatre’s production of John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger and a companion piece Jinny, a contemporary response to Osborne’s seminal work.

The panel for the symposium comprises Derby Theatre’s artistic director and chief executive officer Sarah Brigham who is directing both plays, Derbyshire playwright Jane Wainwright who has penned Jinny, Siobhan O’Gorman, an academic who specialises in 1950s British and Irish drama, former Derby MP Chris Williamson who is also a former leader of Derby City Council and Daisy Guiliano, president of the University of Derby Students’ Union.

The 1956 to 2016: Derby’s Angry Young Men and Women Symposium will analyse subjects including how life today differs from the 1950s, whether class barriers have been broken down and replaced by apathy and whether social media and the Internet brought about social change.

The symposium will be held on Thursday 10 March from 5:30 until 7PM. Places are free but must be booked by calling the box office on 01332 593939 or at the Derby Theatre web site.

Look Back in Anger runs from Friday 4 until Saturday 26 March. Jinny will run on selected days from Monday 7 until Wednesday 23 March.
