Lichfield Garrick and South Staffordshire College have teamed up to establish a foundation degree in performing arts.

Five years ago the two organisations got together to offer a two-year BTEC performing arts diploma.

Adrian Jackson, chief executive and artistic director at Lichfield Garrick, said, “we’re very proud of our partnership with South Staffordshire College and are thrilled that even more students will benefit from the theatre’s resources.

“As with the BTEC, students studying for the foundation degree in performing arts have the use of the Garrick’s facilities throughout the day, gaining invaluable experience of what a professional theatre has to offer. This partnership reinforces the importance of the Garrick within the city, and long may it continue.”

Laurie Asher, performing arts course leader at the college, commented, “our work with the Garrick provides an excellent opportunity for students not only to rehearse and workshop practical pieces within an industry setting, but also stage fully-realised productions in both the studio and main auditorium.

“We’re always grateful for any additional experience the Garrick gives our students and in turn our students thoroughly enjoy the opportunities presented.”

Chris Hopkins, curriculum manager at the college, added, “it’s vital that we give a platform to our new and emerging talent and, thanks to the Garrick working alongside the college, I feel we inspire our learners to raise their aspirations and aim high.”

Plans are underway to develop the performing arts education programme further to include technical skills and design.
