The “funny, moving and sexy story” of how a young woman came to write one of the most enduring characters of literature will be told in Maverick Theatre Company’s The Birth of Frankenstein by Robert Lloyd George.

Adapted and directed by Nick Hennegan with original music by Robb Williams, The Birth of Frankenstein will preview for a single performance in London before going to the Edinburgh Fringe and will then be performed in Birmingham.

Mary Godwin was only 16 when she eloped with married 22-year-old poet Percy Shelley. Two years later they spent a summer with the “mad, bad and dangerous to know” Lord Byron. He proposed that each of them should write a ghost story. Mary came up with Frankenstein.

The Birth of Frankenstein will be at the Tabard Theatre, Chiswick on Sunday 30 July. It then moves to the Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh from Friday 2 until Monday 28 August before being performed at the Billesley pub—where Maverick started—in Birmingham from Tuesday 29 until Thursday 31 August.
