Freed in Residence in York York Theatre Royal has announced that Donald Freed, winner of the P.E.N Prize for Drama 2006, widely regarded as Americas leading political playwright, will become the Theatres Writer in Residence. During his residency he will present a series of master classes in October and November, as well as working on the staging of his controversial play, Patient No. 1, which will be staged at the Theatre in early 2008.
The six-week free Master Class will include guest participants professional writers, directors and actors, authors and academics. Readings, performance and discussion will take place at York Theatre Royal and The Old Vic. This is a unique opportunity for theatre-lovers, theatre practitioners, teachers and students of all ages to learn from one of the most exciting playwrights of this generation.
Donald Freed, a temporary American exile, said about his residency, I am at York Theatre Royal on a grant from America, to present my play Patient No.1, which was feared in America as being politically unacceptable and will instead preview at York Theatre Royal in early 2008. I am also extremely excited about presenting the master class series in York which are dedicated to Matthew Arnolds battle cry 'The Theatre is revolutionary, organise the theatre'."
He added, I chose to work at York Theatre Royal because of the extraordinary courage and lucidity of its artistic director, Damian Cruden, and the entire company. They are in the process of inventing a new theatre in York and a new theatre changes history as Albert Camus said, and that it is why I am spending a year in this home away from home at York Theatre Royal.
During his career his plays have included Inquest (directed by Alan Schneider); Secret Honor (directed by Robert Altman); Circe & Bravo (with Faye Dunaway, directed by Harold Pinter); Veterans Day (with Jack Lemmon and Michael Gambon); The Quartered Man; Alfred and Victoria (A Life); The White Crow; Eichmann in Jerusalem and Devils Advocate. His novels and films have included Agony in New Haven; Executive Action (novel and film with Mark Lane); The Glasshouse Tapes; The Spymaster; In Search of Common Ground (with Erik Erikson, Kai Erikson, Huey P. Newton); The Existentialism of Alberto Moravia (with Joan Ross); Death in Washington; Killing Time; and Every Third House. Freed is currently on leave from the University of Southern California and Artist in Residence at the Workshop Theatre, Leeds University.
