Cool or not? Lewys Holt aims to find out

Lewys Holt uses comedy and dance to explore the notion of “coolness” in Of Or At A Fairly Low Temperature, a solo dance/theatre performance which will be staged at Buxton Fringe.

The performance was originally developed as part of an MA in performance practices at De Montfort University, Leicester. Producers at Dance4, Nottingham were keen to help Holt develop the work and supported him in applying for and securing grants from Arts Council England.

He uses dance, stand-up comedy and a variety of characters, costumes and instruments to portray different aspects of contemporary “cool” while passing comment on them.

He said, “I wanted to make a show that didn’t take itself too seriously. I wanted it to be fun for the audience and for myself. But this doesn’t change the fact that ‘coolness’ has a kind of grip on society, especially young males, and I wanted to treat this with a certain amount of sensitivity that I think it deserves.

“I think dance has a very special way of bridging gaps between comedy and pathos.”

Holt will perform Of Or At A Fairly Low Temperature in the Studio at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton on Saturday and Sunday at 5:15PM.
