Dateline: 16th September, 2002 Writer James Mitchell Dies TV writer James Mitchell has died of cancer at the age of 76. Mitchell, who came from South Shields in Tyne and Wear, had his first play performed by Cleadon Village Drama Group, one of the many small village societies found throughout the UK. He went on to create two major television series. In the 60s he created Callan, which starred Edward Woodward, and then, in the late 70s, the major North East drama, When the Boat Comes In, which starred James Bolam, who was born just six or so miles away from Mitchell. Pther TV work included the BBC series Goodbye Darling and, for Yorkshire TV, Justice, which starred Margaret Lockwood.
