Rebecca Crookshank's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot short listed for Human Rights Arts Award

Rebecca Crookshank's autobiographical play Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has been shortlisted for the Human Rights Arts Award given by Liberty Human Rights.

The play is based on the true events of Crookshank's experience of serving in the Royal Air Force which found her as the sole female officer at her base in the Falklands.

Crookshank took all nine roles in this one-woman play which looked at sexual harassment and bullying of women in the forces.

She said, "the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot creative team are honoured and delighted to be shortlisted for this award alongside a collective of respected activists and fearless campaigners who continue to expose appalling injustice and take action towards change.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is my autobiographical account of inequality, misogyny and sexual harassment in the military. It is now more vital than ever that we defend our Human Rights Act and celebrate the power of collective action. Through touring this show across the UK earlier this year and in New York in November, we are reaching out to audiences of all ages across the globe, uncovering injustice and creating art that shines a light into the face of adversity.”

Also short listed for the Human Rights Arts Award are:

  • KEO Films for Exodus: Our journey to Europe—for shining a light on the human story behind the migration crisis and laying bare the dangers faced by those seeking safety for their loved ones.
  • Nikesh Shukla for The Good Immigrant—for challenging common misapprehensions of why people come to the UK and what it means to be an immigrant here today.
  • Alzheimer’s Society’s Singing for the Brain—for developing a network of spaces across the country where those with dementia can express themselves, socialise and build confidence.

The Awards, which celebrate those who protect fundamental freedoms and promote human rights values of compassion, fairness and respect, will take place on 26 October.

The other Liberty Human Rights Awards are:

  • The Christine Jackson Young Person Award
  • Human Rights ‘Close to Home’ Award
  • Human Rights Lawyer of the Year
  • The Human Rights "Long Walk" Award—to recognise those who have spent many years seeking truth and justice
  • The "More in Common" Award—in memory of Jo Cox MP, to recognise those dedicated to bringing people and communities together.
