Dateline: 6th October, 2005
The very first collaboration between Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Likes of Us (1965), is to be broadcast by BBC Radio 2 later this month and released on CD. Based on the story of Dr Barnardo and with book by Leslie Thomas, the first intention was for it to be premiered in Oxford, but then that was changed to a West End outing after first playing Dublin. Nothing, however, happened and the show was virtually forgotten about until May 2002 when one of the songs, Strange and Lovely Song, was performed as part of the Night of a Thousand Voices concert. On 9th July this year, to celebrate its fortieth anniversary, the show was given its first staging at Lloyd Webber's private festival at Sydmonton with Stephen Fry as the Narrator and Sally Ann Triplett as Syrie. A public performance was given at the Mermaid in Puddle Dock on 12th July and recorded by BBC2. This recording will be broadcast on 21st October at 7.30. The CD will be released on 17th October and can be pre-ordered from the Really Useful Group shop. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
