“Greatest jam session of all time”: Million Dollar Quartet

Inspired by a recording session at which Sam Phillips brought together Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, Million Dollar Quartet is to go on its first UK tour and opens at Leicester’s Curve.

The show includes more than 20 legendary rock ‘n’ roll hits, including “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Hound Dog”, “I Walk The Line” and “Great Balls of Fire”.

On 4 December 4 1956, history was made when four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest impromptu jam sessions ever. The production “brings to light the extraordinary story of broken promises, secrets and the once-in-a-lifetime celebration of four friends that is both poignant and heartwarming”.

The cast includes Jason Donovan as Sam Phillips, Robbie Durham (Johnny Cash), Martin Kaye (Jerry Lee Lewis), Ross William Wild (Elvis Presley), Matt Wycliffe (Carl Perkins) and Katie Ray (Dyanne).

Million Dollar Quartet is written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. It is produced by Simon Friend and Mark Goucher. Ian Talbot, former artistic director of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, directs.

Million Dollar Quartet runs at Curve from Wednesday until Saturday 24 September. It then tours to Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield, Theatre Royal Nottingham, Festival Theatre Malvern, Birmingham Hippodrome, Festival Theatre in Edinburgh, Grand Theatre in Leeds, Kings Theatre in Glasgow, Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and Hippodrome Theatre, Bristol until 3 December.
