“Great opportunity”: Adam Penford Credit: Creative by Wren

A director, a writer and a composer are required for Nottingham Playhouse’s 2024 festive show for younger children The Ugly Duckling.

Creatives from the Midlands are being invited to come up with a 50-minute original stage play for children aged between three and eight. It will be performed in the Playhouse’s Neville Studio before touring schools, libraries and other community spaces.

The theatre’s artistic director Adam Penford commented, “Nottingham Playhouse has been making work for children and touring schools for decades. For many children, it’ll be their first experience of live theatre, so it’s a vital part of what we do. This is a great opportunity for local artists to create something really magical on stage from the classic story of The Ugly Duckling.”

A designer will be appointed through the Playhouse prize, run in conjunction with Nottingham Trent University, from students on its BA (Hons) degree in design for theatre and live performance.

Submission deadlines for all three creatives will be in January and February. Further information is available at the Nottingham Playhouse web site.
