A one-man show which was first produced in the studio at Nottingham Playhouse before being taken to Edinburgh is to go on a UK tour.

Tony’s Last Tape by Andy Barrett is based on the political diaries of one of Britain’s most respected yet controversial politicians, Tony Benn.

Nottingham Playhouse artistic director Giles Croft said, “when we embarked on Tony’s Last Tape as a studio project in 2015 we couldn’t have foreseen how it would capture people’s imagination.

“The plan for a few performances in Nottingham has already expanded to include successful runs in London and Edinburgh before taking it on this national tour.

“It’s a clear indication that Tony Benn’s story, Philip Bretherton’s terrific performance and Andy Barrett’s funny and moving script have combined to create a brilliant piece of theatre.”

Tony’s Last Tape opens at Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield on 20 and 21 September before visiting Liverpool Everyman, Torch Theatre in Milford Haven, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea, Merlin Theatre in Frome, Stamford Arts Centre in Lincolnshire, Lincoln Drill Hall, Gala Theatre in Durham, Grand Theatre Studio in Blackpool, Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton-on-Trent, North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford, Bridge House Theatre in Warwick, Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield, Mumford Theatre in Cambridge, Mercury Theatre in Colchester and The Core at Corby Cube, Corby, Northamptonshire on 21 October.
