National Celebrates RADA with Exhibition

To celebrate their 100th anniversary, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art commissioned award- winning photographer Cambridge Jones to spend the centenary year photographing some of the great names who trained there. The resulting 100 black and white portraits form a British Who's Who of stage and screen, including Kenneth Branagh, Joan Collins, Ralph Fiennes, Ioan Gruffudd, Anthony Hopkins, Jane Horrocks, John Hurt, Adrian Lester, Steve McFadden, Roger Moore, Alan Rickman, directors Mike Leigh and Michael Blakemore, and producer Thelma Holt.

Cambridge Jones, himself a graduate of the Academy, says, "One of the most fascinating things about being asked to do this collection of portraits was discovering that virtually no one knows all the other great names who trained at RADA. This often included pairs of people who work regularly together but had never discovered that they shared an illustrious training."

Cambridge Jones's photographs are intimate, honest and warm. Many of the portraits were taken in the subjects' homes, capturing them off duty, off-stage and away from their stage or screen persona. John Hurt is caught midway through a story about Lord Attenborough & Gandhi; Fiona Shaw is photographed having just flown back from the States; Imelda Staunton is captured talking about the wonders of parenthood; Maxine Peake sits astride a chair on her dining room table; and Matthew Macfadyen is pictured lying on the photographer's bed.

The exhibition Off Stage: The RADA Centenary Portraits will be at the National Theatre from 22nd August to 17th September, opening from Monday to Saturday from10am to 11pm (Bank holidays 4pm - 11pm). Admission is free.

The book Off Stage will be published on 11th August by Dewi Lewis. It includes a foreword by Lord Attenborough and an introductory essay by Miranda Sawyer.

Cambridge Jones is an award-

winning photographer (European Photographer of the Year Awards) whose portrait commissions include Tony Blair, Shania Twain, Laura Bailey and Yousou 'N Dour. His most recent exhibition Face The Music comprised 121 portraits of well-known faces including Edward Heath, Desmond Tutu, Cliff Richard and Davina McCall, and was exhibited at The Proud Galleries alongside his subjects' favourite piece of music. He heads a partnership of photographers, more information about which can be found at www.cambridgejones.com, and lives with his young family in the Peloponnese.
