Lawrence Olivier Bursaries

Nine Laurence Olivier Bursaries totalling £33,700 have been awarded to outstanding drama students from throughout Great Britain and Ireland. The biggest awards of £7,500 each went to Nick Figgis from Newcastle and Tom Vaughan Lawlor from Dublin. They and seven others will follow in the paths of Michael Sheen, Ewan McGregor and Richard Coyle who recently starred with Gwyneth Paltrow in Proof at the Donmar Warehouse. All were previous Laurence Olivier bursary beneficiaries or special commendations.

The Bursary scheme was established in 1987 by the Society of London Theatre to commemorate Lord Olivier's 80th birthday. It aims to help students attending a National Council for Drama Training-accredited drama course. They are in their second year and show considerable talent but are facing financial difficulty in completing the third year of their course.

The 20 accredited drama schools in the UK are asked to nominate up to two students, who are then invited to attend an audition at the Fortune Theatre in London's West End and then an interview with the judges. The judging panel was comprised of eminent theatre professionals including West End producers, actors, casting directors and agents.
