Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s award-winning adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece 1984 will go on a third tour this autumn, starting at Nottingham Playhouse where the show premièred in 2013.

“Filtering the spirit and the ambition of the novel through the lens of contemporary culture”, this new staging “explores surveillance culture, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying”.

George Orwell’s 1984, published in 1949, is one of the most influential novels in recent history, with its chilling depiction of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control.

The cast is Tim Dutton (O’Brien), Simon Coates (Parson), Stephen Fewell (Charrington), Patrick Nolan (Christopher), Ben Porter (Syme), Matthew Spencer (Winston), Mandi Symonds (Mrs Parsons) and Janine Harouni (Julia).

The production, a Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and Almeida Theatre presentation, had its world première in Nottingham in September 2013.

Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan received the best director award in the UK Theatre Awards in 2014. 1984 was nominated for an Olivier award in the best new play category.

Set and costume are designed by Chloe Lamford, with lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound by Tom Gibbons and video by Tim Reid.

1984 runs at Nottingham Playhouse from Wednesday 9 until Saturday 26 September. Press night will be Friday 11 September.

The production will travel to Australia for the Melbourne Festival and then to the US in 2016 for performances in California, Boston and Washington.
