Physical theatre and comedy are part of the new course at Déda, Derby

Derby dance venue Déda is starting a new course which aims to improve budding actors’ understanding of the different aspects of physical theatre.

Physical Theatre and Comedy begins at the Chapel Street venue on Thursday 17 September and a second course, Physical Theatre and Performance, gets under way on 12 November. Both are run by actor and director Gerry Flanagan of Shifting Sands Theatre Company, Matlock.

He explained, “the course is aimed at those who are new to performing and more established practitioners who want to stretch themselves further and develop their self-expression.

“This is a different approach to comedy and performance. We work in a relaxed, playful and energetic way—developing physical expression on stage rather than focusing on the delivery of text.

“Our aim is to bring people together over the coming months and hopefully to perform our original work in a variety of settings including Déda.”

Déda’s head of dance development and learning Clare Limb added, “Gerry is an accomplished actor, director and teacher and we were keen to work with him to offer this course as part of our adult class programme.

“The physical theatre course is open to anyone aged 16 and over and we hope that it will encourage many more people into the performing arts and will expand the repertoire of those already involved in theatre.”

The six week courses cost £72. Further information is available at the Déda web site.
