Birmingham group Women and Theatre is offering people the chance to take part in a new heritage project exploring the experiences of conscientious objectors during World War I.

Theatres of Conscience, delivered in partnership with mac birmingham, will bring together adults from across the city. They will explore newly found tribunal records from the Staffordshire archives and interview relatives of conscientious objectors.

Theatre professionals will then help to produce a new piece which will be performed at mac on Saturday and Sunday, 12 and 13 March.

Janice Connolly, artistic director of Women and Theatre, said, “we’re thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund to recreate at mac the local tribunals. Working with the community to research and share our findings is a precious opportunity to deepen our collective understanding of the history of World War I, with particular reference to the area of conscientious objectors.”

Anyone with relatives or ancestors who were conscientious objectors is encouraged to share stories at a session at mac birmingham on Tuesday 26 February between 6 and 8:30PM.

Further information on how to get involved is available from [email protected] or by calling Women and Theatre on 0121 449 7117.
