Off the Block

Reading Between the Lines is launching "Find a Reading Writer 2013" in a quest to find fresh, new writing talent.

Following the success of RBL Theatre Company’s sell-out launch, Off the Block is back, and once again Reading’s professional theatre company is hosting a competition that will see one talented local writer have work performed by RBL. With a company of actors and directors from many of our nation’s finest theatres, including the RSC, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse and many more, this is an opportunity for anyone with aspirations to write professionally in theatre.

Off the Block is a unique event that epitomises the adrenaline and challenge of performing live and it begins with a ‘writers’ relay’. The first writer will be given a start point from which his or her play must begin and 24 hours to write it. The end of this first play forms the start for the second writer, who again has 24 hours, and so this continues over four days until four new plays are created. On the fifth day, the company meets at 9:30AM to learn, rehearse and make ready their piece by 7:30PM when the audience is seated and the lights go up.

In order to find its fourth writer, and in keeping with its promise to promote and discover local talent, RBL is hosting "Find a Reading Writer 2013".

The competition will be held on Sunday 28 April when, at 10AM, applicants will be e-mailed a start point such as ‘spying on someone’ or ‘on hold’ (which was the challenge of 2012) and have until 4PM to write a two-minute play. All entries will then be read and judged by the RBL panel and all applicants will receive feedback.

The winner of the competition will then write the fourth play of Off the Block and the piece will be performed by the company on Friday 24 May in front of a paying audience.

Anyone who would like to enter the competition should e-mail Toby at [email protected] by Friday 26 April.

The winning writer must be free to write a play over the 24 hours between Thursday 23 May 7:30AM and Friday 24 May 7:30AM. Competition entries must be e-mailed to RBL by 4PM on competition day, Sunday 28 April. Applicants must be over 18. Competition entry deadline is 5PM on Friday 26 April.

Off the Block is on Friday 24th May at South Street Arts Centre.
