Mickey Rooney

Mickey Rooney in Panto

US film legend Mickey Rooney, who is now 86, is to appear as Baron Hardup in Cinderella, this year's pantomime at the Sunderland Empire, and his wife Jan will play the Fairy Godmother.

He will join the already announced Les Dennis (Buttons), former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton (Cinderella) and her husband Andy Scott-Lee (Prince Charming), and ex-Emmerdale star Dale Meeks (Dandini).

Mickey Rooney crawled onto the stage during his father’s Vaudeville act at the age of 18 months in 1922 and so began a career which took him to Hollywood, becoming the number one box office actor in the United States from 1939 to 1941. He appeared in over 200 films and earned an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, a special Juvenile Oscar he shared with Deana Durbin in 1939, five Oscar nominations, one Emmy Award, five Emmy Nominations and two Golden Globes.

This will be his panto debut.
