RSC casts Webster’s White Devil Stratford tragedy

Full casting has been announced for Maria Aberg’s production of John Webster’s violent tragedy The White Devil, which continues the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Roaring Girls season.

Leading the cast is Kirsty Bushell as The White Devil Vittoria and Laura Elphinstone as Vittoria's sister Flamineo.

Kirsty Bushell was last at the RSC in the 2012 productions of Twelfth Night, The Tempest and The Comedy of Errors. Her other credits include Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II at the National Theatre.

Laura Elphinstone returns to the RSC after making her debut in Dominic Cooke’s 2006 production of The Crucible.

Her other theatre credits include Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and Brian Friel’s adaptation of Ivan Turgenev’s A Month in the Country for Chichester Festival Theatre; and Martin Crimp’s new version of Ferdinand Bruckner’s Pains of Youth and Euripides’ Women of Troy for the National Theatre.

The cast of The White Devil also is comprised of: Joseph Arkley (Ludovico); Peter Bray (Marcello); Elspeth Brodie (company); Colin Anthony Brown (ambassador); Faye Castelow (Isabella); Keir Charles (Camillo); Liz Crowther (Cornelia); Lizzie Hopley (Hortensio); Joan Iyiola (Zanche); Tony Jayawardena (ambassador); Michael Moreland (company); Ken Nwosu (Carlo); Tom Padley (Antonelli); David Rintoul (Cardinal Monticelso); Simon Scardifield (Francisco); Jay Simpson (Gasparo); David Sturzaker (Bracciano); and Harvey Virdi (matron).

Maria Aberg returns to the RSC after directing in As You Like It in 2013 and King John in 2012 as part of the World Shakespeare Festival.

Music for The White Devil is composed by David Maclean and Tommy Grace from the band Django Django. Video design is by Nathan Parker.

The production is designed by Naomi Dawson with lighting by James Farncombe and sound by Tom Gibbons. Movement director is Ayse Tashkiran and fight director Malcolm Ranson.

The White Devil runs in the Swan Theatre at Stratford from Wednesday 30 July until Saturday 29 November. Press night is on Wednesday 6 August.
