The Space - new writing competition

London Docklands arts centre, The Space, is piloting a new writing competition.

A three-phase programme of script development will support the six participants towards the publication of their scripts and a rehearsed reading by professional actors in front of a public audience in June. The venue will also give one of the six plays a full-length run later in the year.

The six playwrights are

  • Daniel Davies
  • Berri George
  • Chris Jury
  • Natasha Langridge
  • Isley Lynn
  • Freddie Machin

The Space’s Literary Manager, Sebastian Rex, said: “With a strong industry trend into finding one’s individual ‘voice’ it is very common for writers to pursue a known and trusted journey rather than challenge themselves and embark on a new one.

"This comes at the expense of exploration and self-discovery, which we believe writing for theatre should be about.

"What ScriptSix aims to do is to give writers the opportunity to challenge themselves and explore a new voice or a new way of writing—something that scares them, something they don’t know how to do or something they thought they could never write.”

The scripts will be published in an anthology by Playdead Press.
