Motherly role: Shobna Gulati

Shobna Gulati is to play Daljit in a new tour of Anita and Me, Tanika Gupta’s adaptation of Meera Syal’s novel.

Gulati played Anita in Victoria Wood's television series Dinnerladies and Sunita Alahan in the soap Coronation Street. Her stage roles include the 2014 tour of John Godber’s April in Paris alongside Joe McGann.

Anita and Me is a coming-of-age tale which follows Meena, a young girl growing up in the only Punjabi family in a 1970s Black Country mining village. When she meets Anita, Meena’s world is turned upside down as she is caught between two different cultures. Gulati will play Meena’s mother Daljit.

The Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Birmingham REP production will open at Wolverhampton Grand on 14 February 2017 and will tour the UK until April.

Birmingham REP artistic director Roxana Silbert will direct. Further casting will be announced later.
