Tara Tours Merchant

Tara Arts are internationally renowned for their visual, memorable versions of some of the world's best-loved classical theatre. This year Artistic Director Jatinder Verma continues this tradition by touring Shakespeare's famous story of racial tension, misplaced loyalties and vaunting ambition - The Merchant Of Venice.

Presented by an Indian performing troupe of Christian coverts, the production is set in the 16th Century Keralan port of Cochin, along the south-west coast of India. Like Shakespeare's London, Cochin was a thriving centre for trade, where Christians and Jews rubbed shoulders uneasily, and conversion exercised minds and hearts. The Portuguese had brought their brand of militant Catholicism to Kerala, while England was in the throes of militant Protestantism.
